Max Von Sydow
was nominated for Best Actor for his performance as an elderly itinerate worker
in
the Swedish masterpiece Pelle the Conqueror (1988) and for
Best Supporting Actor for the 9/11 drama Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close (2011). He had no dialogue in the latter film in his role as a man who is made mute by a personal trauma, but his character communicates entirely through notes he writes in English.
